Term | Definition |
---|---|
Solid | A state of matter that has a definite shape and a definite volume. |
Gas | A state of matter with no definite shape or volume |
Liquid | A state of matter that has no definite shape but has a definite volume. |
Surface Tension | Is an inward force, or pull, among that molecules in a liquid that make the top almost skin-like |
Viscosity | A liquid’s resistance to flowing. |
Vibrate | Move back and forth slightly |
Thermal Energy | the energy contained within a system that is responsible for its temperature. |
Melting point | The temperature at which a substance changes from a solid to a liquid |
Freezing Point | The temperature at which a liquid changes to a solid. |
Evaporation | The process by which molecules at the surface of a liquid absorb enough energy to change to a gas. |
Condensation | The change of state from a gas to a liquid. |
Sublimation | The change in state from a solid directly to a gas without passing through the liquid state. |
Boiling Point | The temperature at which a liquid boils. |
Pressure | The force pushing on a surface |
Proportional | Consistent with , if one value increases the other does as well |
Charles's law | A principle that describes the relationship between the temperature and volume of a gas at constant pressure |
Boyle's Law | A principle that describes the relationship between the pressure and volume of a gas at a constant temperature |
Convection Current | The movement of a fluid, caused by differences in temperature, that transfers heat from one part of the fluid to another. |
The law of conservation of energy | The rule that energy cannot be created or destroyed it can only be transformed. |
Wave | The transfer of energy from one location to another |
Mechanical Wave | a wave that has to move through some type of matter |
Medium | The matter that a wave moves through |
Electromagnetic Waves | Wave that does not need matter to travel (can travel through space) |
Transverse Waves | waves that move up and down |
Longitudinal wave | waves that move back and forth slightly (vibrate) |
Amplitude | Height of the wave |
Wavelength | The distance between peaks of waves |
Frequency | The number of waves that pass a point after a certain time |
Organism | A living thing |
Cell | The basic unit of life |
Unicellular | made of one cell |
Multicellular | consisting of many cells |
Mitochondria | The powerhouse of the cell |
Nucleus | The brain of the cell, it controls everything |
chloroplast | makes food in the animals cell only |
cell membrane | protective layer that controls what comes in and leaves the cell |
ER/Ribosomes | makes proteins in the cell |
Vacuole | It stores things like water and food in the cell |
Conduction | the transfer of heat through touch |
Radiation | The transfer of heat through waves |
Convection | The transfer of heat through currents in air or water |
Homeostasis | The condition in which an organism’s internal environment is kept stable in spite of changes in the external environment. |
Stimulus | A change in an environment that causes a reaction. |
Fault | a break in part of the earth's crust that is like a crack in the surface of the earth. |
Relative Age: | is its age compared to the ages of other rock |
Fossils | The preserved remains or traces of living things |
Intrusion | when magma cools and solidifies before it reaches the surface of the Earth |
Absolute Age | The age of a rock given as the number of years since the rock formed |
Superposition | in horizontal layers of sedimentary rock, each layer is older than the layer above it and younger than the layer below it. |
Geology | The study of rocks and fossils or remains of living things |
Radioactive Dating | Determining the age of an object using the half-life of one or more radioactive elements |
Convergent Plate boundary | where two plates are moving towards each other |
Divergent Plate Boundary | When two plates are moving away from each other |
Transform Boundary | When two plate slide past one another |
Transpiration | The evaporation of water from plants |
Precipitation | any form of water that falls from clouds |
runoff | water that flows over the ground surface rather than soaking into the ground |
Infiltration | Water that soaks into the ground |
