Elevation | The height on top of the sea level on Earth. |
Relief | The difference between the higher and lower sections of an area. |
Land form | A feature of the way the land is shaped that was formed by the process that shaped the surface of the earth. |
Land form region | A big or huge part of land where the shape of the land is similar. |
Plain | A landform that is made from flat or gently rolling land with low relief. |
Mountain | A landform that has strong elevation and high relief. |
Mountain range | A group of landforms called mountains that have similar shapes, structure, and age. |
Plateau | A landform with high elevation that is rarely smooth on top. |
Lithosphere | The rocky, solid, outer layer of Earth. |
Atmosphere | The sphere that is outermost and that contains a mixture of gasses that surrounds the Earth. |
Hydrosphere | The part of Earth that contains most of Earth's lakes, rivers and ice. |
Biosphere | The part of Earth that contains all of Earth's living things everywhere. |
Globe | A sphere that shows and represents all of the outer part of earth. |
Scale | Shows the distance on a map to the distance on Earth's surface. |
Symbols | The pictures that show what the features on Earth’s surface means. |
Key | A list of all the symbols that were used on the map. |
Equator | An imaginary line that circles around Earth halfway between the North and South Poles. |
Hemisphere | One half of the Earth’s sphere. |
Prime meridian | An imaginary line that makes a half circle from the north to the south pole. |
Degree | Units that are used to measure distances around a circle. |
Latitude | Distance in degrees that are south or north of the equator. |
Longitude | Distance in degrees that are west or east of the prime meridian. |
Map projection | A framework of lines to help show landmasses on a flat or smooth surface. |
Topographic map | A map that shows the surface features of an area of land. |
Contour line | A line that connects points of equal elevation on a topographic map. |
Contour interval | The difference from one elevation in one contour line. |
Global Positioning System (GPS) | A method for finding latitude and longitude using satellites. |
