TermDefinition
Atom The smallest particle of an element; made of electrons, protons, and neutrons
Chemical Equation Chemical formulas and symbols written to represent a reaction
Chemical Formula A shorthand notation that uses chemical symbols and numbers as subscripts to represent the type and number of atoms that are present in the smallest unit of a substance
Chemical Process Method or means of changing one or more chemicals or chemical compounds
Chemical Reaction The process by which one or more substances change to produce one or more different substances
Coefficient A number placed in front of a chemical symbol or formula that represents the number of molecules
Conserve To prevent the loss of something
Law of Conservation of Matter Scientific law stating that the mass of all reactants must equal the mass of all products; matter is neither created nor destroyed
Mass A measure of how much matter is present in a substance
Molecule The simplest unit of a chemical compound that can exist, formed when two or more atoms join together chemically
Product A substance produced during a chemical reaction
Properties Physical and chemical characteristics of matter used to describe or identify a substance
Reactant A substance that takes part in and undergoes change during a chemical reaction
Subscript A number written below and to the right of a chemical symbol that shows the number of a specific type of atom present
