cerebellum The posterior portion of the metencephalon, containing the cerebellar hemispheres; includes the arbor vitae, cerebral nuclei, and cerebellar cortex
myelin An insulating, lipid-rich sheath around an axon; consists of multiple layers of neuroglial plasma membrane; significantly increases the impulse propagation rate along the axon
horns Projections of gray matter toward the outer surface of the spinal cord
seizure Temporary cerebral disorder accompanied by abnormal movements, unusual sensations, inappropriate behavior or some combination of these signs and symptoms
electroencephalogram A graphic record of the electrical activities of the brain
meninges Three membranes that surround the surfaces of the central nervous system; the dura mater, the arachnoid, and the pia mater
diencephalon A division of the brain that includes the epithalamus, thalamus and hypothalamus
ganglia A collection of neuron cell bodies outside the central nervous system
