airway emergencies

TermDefinition
Respiration (airway) the exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen
Pulmonary Edema (airway) fluid build up in lungs and alveoli - crackling/rales - pink/ frothy sputum - o2 saturation drops - cyanosis - dyspnea Tx -o2 - transport - semi fowlers
Epiglottis (airway) bacterial infection that causes severe swelling of the epiglottis -stridor - cyanosis - sniffing position, tripod Tx -o2 transport immediately
Emphysema (airway) Disease in lungs where alveoli lose elasticity due to chronic stretching (COPD dry form) - wheezing -couching - diminished breath lung sounds Tx -o2 -semi fowlers -ALS -transport
Pleural Effusion (airway) fluid outside of lungs in the parietal pleura - diminished lung sounds -SOB -sudden onset dyspnea -cough -hypertension -pneumonia -chemical exposure -cancer Tx -CPAP -transport -ALS -semi fowlers
Tuberculosis (airway) A disease that can lay dormant in the lungs for decades and then reactivate - coughing blood - fever -
Dyspnea (airway) SOB or difficulty breathing
Pneunomia (airway) infectious disease of the lung that damages the lung tissue
Hypoxia (airway) insufficient oxygen in cells
Bronchitis (airway) acute or chronic inflammation of the bronchioles that damages lung tissue -cough -mucus -fever -rhochi Tx -O2 -ALS -semi-fowlers -breathing Tx
Hyperventilation (airway) over breathing to the point of carbon dioxide levels in blood fall below normal
Allergen (airway) substance that causes an allergic Rx
Asthama (airway) acute spasm of the bronchioles from excessive mucus production and swelling of the mucous lining of the lungs -wheezing -coughing -SOB Tx -O2 -POWT -semi fowlers -MDI
Spontaneous Pneumothorax (airway) acute buildup of air in pleural space caused by bleb - dyspnea -SOB -chest pain -anxiety - hypotension -absent sounds -cyanosis Tx -ALS -o2 -POWT
Tension Pneumothorax (airway) buildup of air in pleural space caused by bleb usually trauma - dyspnea -SOB -chest pain -anxiety - hypotension -absent lung sounds -cyanosis Tx -ALS -o2 -POWT
Aortic Aneurysm (airway) a weakness in the walls of the aorta making it susceptible to rupture
Dissecting Aneurysm (airway) a condition in which the inner layer of an artery become separated allowing blood to flow between the layers
Pulmonary Embolism (airway) a blood clot that breaks off from a large vein and travels to the blood vessels of the lungs causing obstruction of blood flow
FBAO (airway) foreign body airway obstruction
Hemothorax (airway) a collection of blood in the pleural cavity
Hemopneumothorax (airway) the accumulation of air and blood in pleural space of chest
CHF (airway) congestive heart failure - heart loses part of its ability to effectively pump blood -usually results in backup fluid into lungs
COPD (airway) chronic obstructive pulmonary disease -slow process of dilation and disruption of the airway and alveoli caused by chronic bronchial obstruction
Anaphylaxis (airway) extreme, life threatening allergic reaction that may include shock and respiratory failure
Whooping Cough (pertussis) (airway) airborne bacterial infection that affects mostly children younger than 6 y/o -Pt is feverish and exhibits a whooping sound on inspiration
Meningitis (airway) an inflammation of the of the meningeal covering of the brain and spinal cord -stiff neck is hallmark sign
Atelectasis (airway) collapse of the alveolar air space of the lungs
Ventilation (airway) exchange of air between the lungs and the environment

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
