Acids and Bases

Acids and Bases+Ph+Indicator (titration)

QuestionAnswer
What are acids and are they Harmful A substance which turns blue litmus red and has a pH of less than 7. Strong acids are corrosive and can ‘eat away’ at materials e.g. Hydrochloric acid Weak acids are not harmful e.g. lemons (citric acid)
What Are Bases and are they Harmful A substance which turns red litmus blue and has a pH of greater than 7. Bases neutralise acids Strong bases can be harmful e.g. concentrated sodium hydroxide Weak bases are not harmful e.g. baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN ACID AND A BASE? Acids turn litmus paper red Bases turn litmus paper Blue
WHAT IS AN INDICATOR? An indicator is a compound that shows by means of a colour change whether a substance is acidic or basic Litmus paper is an indicator that only shows whether its an acid or base Universal indicator informs us of any pH on the scale e.g. 1 up to 14.
What is a neutral substance This means they are neither acidic nor basic
WHAT IS THE PH SCALE? The pH scale tells us how acidic or basic a substance is The pH scale goes from 0 to 14 A solution whose pH is 7 is neutral A solution whose pH is less than 7 is acidic Universal indicator paper is used to measure pH
REACTION OF ACIDS WITH METALS An acid always reacts with a metal to produce a salt and hydrogen gas The word equation for the reaction between an acid and a metal is: Metal + acid 🡪 salt and hydrogen
HOW DO WE KNOW HYDROGEN IS PRESENT? If hydrogen is present you will hear a ‘squeaky pop’ sound when you place a lit splint into the test tube
What is Neutralisation When an acid reacts with a base a neutralisation reaction occurs They react to produce a salt and water The word equation for the reaction between an acid and a base is: An acid + a base 🡪 salt + water
What do you need to perform in order to carry out a neutralisation In order to carry out a neutralisation reaction of an acid and a base, you need to perform a titration
What Equipment is used in the process of titration Burette Tap Conical Flask Hydrochloric Acid Sodium Hydroxide Containing Phenolphthalein
outline a few steps in the titration process A pipette is used to measure a base, sodium hydroxide The burette is used to measure the acid, hydrochloric acid We add the base to the conical flask and also an indicator to see a colour change
What is the product of neutralisation When you add an acid to a base they neutralise – all the ions rearrange and the products salt and water are formed (e.g. NaOH and HCl)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
