Gas a state of matter without any defined volume or shape in which atoms or molecules move about freely
Heat the transfer of thermal energy
Hydrogen the chemical element consisting of one proton and one electron
Light waves of electromagnetic energy; electromagnetic energy that people can see
Light Year the distance light travels in a vacuum in one year; about 6 trillion miles
Magnify to make something appear larger, usually by using one or more lenses
Nebulae an interstellar cloud made up of hydrogen gas, plasma, helium gas, and dust
Optical having to do with the eye or lenses
Star a massive ball of gas in outer space that gives off heat, light and other forms of radiation
Sun any star around which planets revolve
Telescope an instrument used to observe objects that are far away
Universe everything that exists in, on and around the Earth
Air the part of the atmosphere closest to Earth; the part of the atmosphere that organisms on Earth use for respiration
Attract (Magnetism) the action between two opposing magnetic poles.
Core the innermost layer of Earth, comprised of the liquid outer core and solid inner core; consists mainly of iron and nickel.
Earth the third planet from the Sun; the planet on which we live (related words: earthly; earth - meaning soil or dirt).
Electric having to do with electricity; a form of energy commonly used for lights, electric motors, and heating.
Electromagnet a metal object that acts as a magnet when an electric current moves through it.
Equator an imaginary line that divides Earth into Northern and Southern Hemispheres; located halfway between the North and South Poles (related word: equatorial)
Force a pull or push that is applied to an object
Magnet an object with a north and south pole that produces a magnetic field (related term: magnetism, magnetic)
Magnetic Field a region in space near a magnet or electric current in which magnetic forces can be detected
Planet a large circular mass that revolves around a star
Polar in earth science, having to do with the areas on Earth closest to the geographic North or South poles; in chemistry, describes a molecule that has a positively charged side and a negatively charged side (related words: pole, polarity).
Pole the opposite ends of a battery, a magnet, or the north and south ends of the Earth
Repel to force an object away or to keep it away (related term: repulsion)
Sun any star around which planets revolve
Asteroid a small object made of rock or metal that orbits the sun
Axis an imaginary line that an object spins or revolves around
Comet a body of ice and dust that travels in a long narrow orbit around the sun
Diameter the length of a straight line that runs from one side of a circle (or sphere), through the middle of the circle (or sphere), to the other side; the width of a circle or sphere through its middle.
Earth the third planet from the Sun; the planet on which we live (related words: earthly; earth - meaning soil or dirt)
Gravity a force that exists between any two objects that have mass (related word: gravitational)
Kuiper Belt an area in the solar system beyond the planets where many small, icy bodies are located
Latitude angular distance north and south of the equator
Moon a body in outer space that orbits a planet; a natural satellite
Orbit the circular path of an object as it revolves around another object
Position a specific point in space
Revolution the orbiting of an object around another object
Rotate turning around on an axis; spinning (related word: rotation)
Rotation the spinning of a celestial body, such as a planet, around an axis
Space the large, empty part of the universe that does not contain any matter
Star a massive ball of gas in outer space that gives off heat, light and other forms of radiation
Sun any star around which planets revolve
Surface the top of an object; the outside of an object; the boundary between two objects or materials
System a group of parts that work together to function or perform a task
Theory a set of statements or principles devised to explain a group of facts or phenomena, especially one that has been repeatedly tested or is widely accepted and can be used to make predictions about natural phenomena.
Elliptical shaped like an oval
Force a pull or push that is applied to an object
