What are the levels of organization of the human body? | Chemical, organelle, cellular, tissue, organ, system, organism. |
What does "lumen" mean? | Lumen is the hollow area of any organ. E.g. blockage of respiratory airway may be called "luminal obstruction." |
What is hydrolysis? | It is when a water molecule is added to break down a larger compound into small subunits. |

What biomolecule is the body's most concentrated source of energy? | Triglycerides. |
What do lysosomes do? | Digestive enzymes break down defective cell parts (autophagy) and ingested particles; some are involved in membrane repair or secretion. |
What are epidermal dendritic cells? | Also called Langerhans cells, they play a role in immunity. |
What are Merkel cells? | Also called tactile epithelial cells, they form structures that serve as light touch receptors. |
What are the functions of bones? | Support, protection, movement, mineral storage, hematopoesis. |
What are fibrous joints? | Called synarthroses, they fit closely together and permit very limited movement. |
