Biochemistry

TermDefinition
Lipids Molecules that are used for long-term energy storage. Fats and waxes and oils.
Proteins Molecules that are made up of amino acids. Help build hair, skin, nails, etc.
Enzymes Proteins that help speed up chemical reactions in the body.
Lactase An enzyme that speeds up the digestion of the milk sugar, lactose.
Carbohydrates Molecules that give the cells quick energy! SUGARS! Found in breads, pastas, candy.
Amino Acids The monomers of proteins.
Nucleic Acids Molecules that store genetic information. DNA!
Monomer Building blocks of larger molecules. Mono = one.
Polymer Large molecules made up of repeating monomers.
Substrate The molecule that an enzyme acts on.
Active Site The part of the enzyme where the substrate attaches. The shape must fit!
Reactants The ingredients of a chemical reaction.
Products What is made after a chemical reaction occurs.
Monosaccharides The building blocks of carbohydrates.
Nucleotides The building blocks of nucleic acids.
Activation energy The energy needed to start a chemical reaction.
Denature When the shape of an enzyme is destroyed.
Biology The study of life...OR THE BEST SUBJECT EVER!
Cells The smallest units capable of life.
