CHEM/BME Stop

TEAM Route

QuestionAnswer
Opener Welcome to Sweeney hall which is home to our chemical and biological engineering departments as well as our newest major biomedical engineering
Chemical1 (1) So starting off with our chemical engineers, chemical engineers use a combination of chemistry, math, and physics to convert raw materials into products that benefit the world.
Chemical2 (1) You may be wondering what the difference is between a chemist and chemical engineer though, and if you weren't maybe now you are.
Chemical3 (1) If you have a medication for example, a chemist will create the formula of a pill, but chemical engineers are able to develop ways to mass produce this product to the world.
Chemical4 (2) A class here at Iowa State that chemical engineering students take is CH E 356. This class is transport phenomena and last fall students in this course designed a process to make Reese's peanut butter cups.
Chemical 5 (1) The previous spring they did this for peeps which is really neat. They determine all the parameters like pumps and pipes for this design.
Chemical 6 (2) All chemical engineers also have to take a 2 semester lab course called the units operation lab. In this lab, students get hands on experience with industrial equipment.
Chemical7 (2) Students also have the option to take this lab in Oviedo Spain over the summer in an intensive 5-week program which would provide the 2 semesters worth of credits. Students would work Mon-Thurs and get Fridays to explore Spain.
Chemical8/Transition (3) This is one of many really cool opportunities students could get here at ISU. As I mentioned earlier, Sweeney hall is also now home to our biomedical engineers. BME for short.
Biomed1(1) BME is our newest engineering major here on campus with the first cohort officially beginning in this semester, and we're so excited to welcome our 15th engineering degree here at Iowa State.
Biomed2 (1) Biomedical students will learn how to solve complex healthcare problems by taking hands on courses and labs across campus.
Biomed3 (1) For example, I am currently in a research lab that is working on advancing 3D bioprinting with the long term goal of being able to produce fully functional cellular organs so we wont have to rely on donors for example.
Biomed4 (1) In general though, this is a large area of study right now in the Biomedical world as well as so many other things that can help improve countless lives.
Biomed5 (1) One of the first classes that BME students take is BME 160 which is biomedical problem solving. In this course, students have the opportunity to work in teams and to measure physiological processes like grip strength and respiration rate.
Biomed6 (2) They are then able to apply these things to biomedical applications, and learn how they could positively impact health and improve disease. Personally, I thought this class was very interesting, I really enjoyed it.
Biomed7(1) The community/team atmosphere of the class was great as well, especially for students get a feel of what it's like since there is a lot of collaboration in any engineering degree.
Biomed(8) (2) Biomedical engineers are in high demand and definitely are needed everywhere in many different aspects to improve human health. Upon graduating, these students will be able make advances in technology and medicine, improving human health.
Biomed9/Transition (2) Also, if you're thinking about potentially going to med school, Biomedical engineering would be a great place to start. So, with all that information, does anyone have any questions?
Final (1) Okay, we will now head out these door and go through the tudent innovation center to get to Marston Hall.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
