Unit 3 ch 3+4

QuestionAnswer
Why does more rain form over West Ferris than East Ferris? Part 1 More rain forms over West Ferris than East Ferris because more water vapor is condensing into liquid on the West side. The water evaporates from the ocean and the wind blows it toward the mountain.
Why does more rain form over West Ferris than East Ferris? Part 2 When the water vapor is pushed into the mountain by the wind the mountain pushes it upward. As the water vapor moves up the mountain, the atmosphere is colder as it gets higher.
Why does more rain form over West Ferris than East Ferris? Part3 As the water vapor cools, it turns into liquid water and falls down as rain. By the time it reaches the top and moves onto the east side there is very little water vapor left.
Where in the atmosphere water vapor condense? High up where the temperature is cold.
When liquid water evaporates, water molecules do not 1._______, they change to 2._______ ______. 1. Disappear. 2. Water Vapor.
When wind blows toward a mountain, the mountain can direct the wind 1._______ 1. Upward.
What are the two factors we discussed that affect the movement of water vapor in the atmosphere? Wind and mountain size.
When liquid falls as rain, there is 1.____ water left in the atmosphere 1. Less.
What is the rain shadow effect? The uneven pattern of rain that occurs when wind blows from a body of water towards a mountain and creates a lot of rain on the windward side of the mountain, and very little on the opposite side.
Water vapor in the atmosphere hitting a mountain and changing direction is an example of what two spheres interacting? Hydrosphere and Geosphere.
What are the 4 sphere sin Earth's system? Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, Biosphere, and Geosphere.
Geosphere All of rock and soil on Earth.
Biosphere All living things on Earth.
Hydrosphere All of the water on Earth.
Atmosphere The air that surrounds the Earth.
Water Vapor Water in the form of invisible gas.
Condensation When a gas turns into a liquid.
Molecule A group of atoms joined together in a particular way.
Evaporation When a liquid turns into a gas.
System A group of parts that work together.
