What is the function of the Dermis layer? Provides strength and elasticity
What is the function of the Subcutaneous layer? Provides support and stores fat + protects internal structures
How many layers are there to the Epidermis? 5 layers
What are Keratinocytes? Proteins that provide strength to hair, skin and nails
What are Melanocytes? Form the skins pigmentation
What is the function of Dendritic Cells? Process antigen material + present it on cell surface to T cells of the immune system
What is Allergic Contact Dermatitis? T cell mediated inflammatory reaction
What is the function of the Skin? Protection - Sensation - temp regulation - Excretion - Source of Vitamin D
What happens to the Skin as we age? Skin function declines - Becomes flatter + thinner - reduced elasticity - decreased sensation - dehydrated
What are acute wounds? Short in duration - happen suddenly - heals over time
What are Chronic wounds? Longer in duration - underlying issues eg Venous Insufficiency - Inflamed
What are the Healing phases? Hemostasis (Blood Clots) 1-3 days Inflammatory (Scab) 3-20 days Proliferative (Pulls wound together) wk1-6 Remodeling (Final proper tissue) wk6-2yrs
What are some factors the effect healing? Age - Anaemia - Medications - Temp - Smoking - Nutrition - Health condition
What are some local factors that effect healing? Blood Supply - Denervation - Duration - Infection - Size - Location
What are the categories of wounds? Dry necrosis - Wet necrosis - Slough - Infected/Maladourous - Granulating - Epithelialising
What are the characteristics of Granulation? Healthy - Bright red/Moist/Shiny/No bleeding Unhealthy - Dark red/Dry/Dull/Bleeds easily
What are the characteristics of Slough? Yellow/white material Dead cells - Neutrophilis - prolongs inflammatory response Prevents healing
