Emotion | A complex psychological state involving physiological arousal, expressive behaviors, and conscious experience, often triggered by a specific stimulus. |
James-Lange Theory | The theory proposing that emotions arise from our awareness of our specific bodily responses to an emotion-arousing stimulus. |
Cannon-Bard Theory | The theory suggesting that an emotion-triggering stimulus and the body's arousal occur simultaneously, leading to the conscious experience of emotion. |
Two-Factor Theory | The theory that to experience emotion, one must be physically aroused and cognitively label the arousal. |
Polygraph | A machine designed to detect and measure physiological responses associated with emotions, often used in attempts to detect lies. |
Projective Test | A personality test that provides ambiguous stimuli designed to trigger projection of one's inner dynamics. |
Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) | A projective test in which people express their inner feelings and interests through the stories they make up about ambiguous scenes. |
Rorschach Inkblot Test | A projective test consisting of ten inkblots that examine interpretations to identify an individual's inner thoughts and feelings. |
Affiliation Need | The fundamental need to belong and form attachments with others. |
Ostracism | Social exclusion or rejection by a group, leading to feelings of loneliness and isolation. |
Narcissism | Excessive self-love or self-centeredness, often accompanied by a lack of empathy for others. |
Grit | The perseverance and passion for long-term goals, especially in the face of setbacks. |
Personality | An individual's characteristic pattern of thinking, feeling, and behaving. |
Psychodynamic Theories | Psychological theories emphasizing the role of unconscious influences, early life experiences, and interpersonal relationships in shaping personality. |
Psychoanalysis | Freud's therapeutic technique, aiming to bring unconscious conflicts to conscious awareness. |
Unconscious | The reservoir of mostly unacceptable thoughts, wishes, feelings, and memories. |
Free Association | A psychoanalytic technique where a patient spontaneously reports thoughts, feelings, and mental images. |
Id | The part of the personality that operates on the pleasure principle, seeking immediate gratification. |
Ego | The part of the personality that mediates among the demands of the id, superego, and reality, guided by the reality principle. |
Superego | The part of the personality that represents internalized ideals and provides standards for judgment. |
Psychosexual Stages | Freud's theory of stages of development, each associated with a different erogenous zone and conflict. |
Oedipus Complex | According to Freud, a child's feelings of desire for his or her opposite-sex parent and jealousy and rivalry with the same-sex parent. |
