Egg | Human female sex cell. |
Sperm | Human male sex cell. |
Ovary | Where the egg in the female reproductive system is produced. |
Testes | Where the sperm in the male reproductive system is produced. |
Fallopian Tubes | The site of fertilisation of the male and female gamete. |
Menstruation | The process of bleeding that occurs from days 1-5 of the menstrual cycle. |
Ovulation | The process of releasing an egg from the ovary into the fallopian tube that occurs on or near day 14 of the menstrual cycle. |
Artificial Methods of Contraception | Condoms (barrier) and the pill (chemical). |
Genes | Short sections of DNA on chromosomes that control inheritable characteristics. |
DNA & Protein | The two substances from which chromosomes are made. |
Lining of the Uterus | Where successful implantation of the zygote occurs. |
Contraception | Any method used to prevent the fertilisation of gametes and pregnancy, e.g. condoms. |
Sperm Duct | Tubes that transport sperm from the testes to the prostate. |
Placenta | Where food, oxygen, water, hormones and antibodies pass from mother to baby by diffusion. The two bloods never mix. |
Umbilical Cord | Carries nutrients and wastes between the placenta and the developing foetus. |
Nucleus | Where the DNA is located in the cell. |
Fertile Period | The time of the menstrual cycle when fertilisation is most likely to occur. |
Fertilisation | The fusion of the male and female gametes to form a single cell called a zygote. |
Male Reproductive System Features | Testes, penis, seminal gland, prostate, sperm duct and urethra. |
Female Reproductive System Features | Ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus and vagina. |
Puberty | The process of change in which an adolescent becomes sexually mature. |
Puberty in Males | Voice deepens, increased hair growth on body, muscle develops and genitalia grow larger. |
Puberty in Females | Breasts develop, hips widen, hair growth around sex organs and menstrual cycle begins. |
The Menstrual Cycle | A series of changes that occur in the female reproductive tract over repetitive periods of time. |
Sexual Intercourse | An action resulting in the release of semen containing sperm into the vaginal canal. |
Fertility | The ability to produce offspring. |
Infertility | The inability to produce offspring. |
Implantation | The burrowing of the embryo into the lining of the uterus. |
Embryo | The developing ball of cells up to eight weeks. |
Foetus | The developing cells after eight weeks in the uterus. |
Natural Methods of Contraception | Avoiding intercourse during periods of fertility. |
