TermDefinition
Ecology The study of organisms and their interactions with the environment.
Habitat Where an organism lives.
Community The different populations of organisms that live together in an ecosystem.
Population The number of one species of organism living in an ecosystem.
Ecosystem A group of interacting organisms and their environment.
Legend A table that explains the symbols/colours used on a map.
Environmental Factors Temperature, light intensity, aspect and wind speed.
Competition The active struggle between organisms for a scarce resource, e.g. water or prey.
Equipment Used to Collect Small Animals (Pooter, sweep net, beating tray and pitfall trap.)
Identification Key A chart used to identify organisms based on answering a series of altering questions.
Quadrat A square frame used to estimate plant numbers.
Adaptation The way in which a species changes and evolves to suit the environment.
Evolution The way in which a species changes over time.
Line Transect A line that can be placed across a habitat to measure/estimate species distribution.
Food Chain A chain of organisms in which each one is eaten by the next and energy is passed along the chain.
Predator An organism that catches, kills and eats other organisms.
Prey An organism that is caught, killed and eaten by another organism
Interdependence When organisms rely on each other to survive.
Vertebrates Animals that have a backbone.
Invertebrates Animals that do not have a backbone.
Producers Organisms that make their own food.
Consumers Organisms that eat other organisms.
Decomposers Organisms that break down dead plants or animals.
Competition Organisms struggling for the same resource, e.g. water or food.
Biodiversity The variety among living organisms.
Sustainability of Ecosystems The maintenance of ecosystems for the future.
Examples of Biodiversity Threats Raw material extraction, pollution, burning of fossil fuels, food production, etc.
Conservation The careful preservation and protection of our natural resources.
Quota A limit on the quantity of a species that can be removed from an ecosystem.
Examples of Biodiversity Conservation Organic farming practices, crop rotation, new techniques of food production, etc.
Niche The role in its community.
