TermDefinition
food chain series of organisms each dependent on the next as a source of food
food web consists of all the food chains in a single ecosystem
symbiosis close and long-term biological interaction between two organisms of different species
predator An organism which hunts other organisms for food.
competition organisms fighting for the same resources in an environment
mutualism A symbiotic relationship that benefits both organisms.
commensalism A symbiotic relationship that benefits one organism and the other is neither helped nor harmed.
parasitism A symbiotic relationship where one organism benefits (parasite) and the other is harmed (host.)
abiotic Not made of cells; non-living; temperature, air, water, sunlight, soil, etc
biotic anything made of cells; living or dead; animals, plants, bacteria, fungi
producers Living organisms that convert sunlight into food; base of all life on Earth
consumers An organism that gets energy from eating other organisms.
host Organism that supports a parasite
prey An animal hunted or caught for food.
organism Any living thing, such as a plant or animal; smallest level of organization
population A group of the same type of organism that lives in the same area.
ecosystem All of the biotic and abiotic parts of an area.
community Group of populations commonly found together.
variation variety of traits in a population of the same species that live in the same area
trait Characteristics that an organism has and can be passed onto the next generation
adaptation a trait (structural, physiological, or behavioral) that improves an organism’s ability to survive in its environment;
