divergent boundary The lithospheric plates are moving away from each other.

mid ocean ridges a long underwater mountain range formed when two tectonic plates move or pull apart from each other
convergent boundary A boundary where two pieces of the Earth’s crust are colliding.
subduction zone Occurs at convergent plate boundaries; the process where one plate slides under another.
ocean trench long, narrow depressions on the seafloor that form at the boundary of tectonic plates where one plate is pushed beneath another
transform boundary The boundary between two tectonic plates that are sliding past one another.
plate tectonics scientific theory that explains how major landforms are created as a result of Earth's plates moving
continental crust thick part of the Earth's crust that forms the large landmasses
fault A crack within the Earth’s rocky crust.
oceanic crust thin part of Earth’s crust found under the oceans
hot spot an area of the Earth's mantle from which hot plumes rise upward, forming volcanoes on the overlying crust
supervolcano arge volcano having the potential to produce an eruption with major effects on the global climate and ecosystem
