element pure substance made of only one type of atom
periodic table of elements (P.T.) organized table of chemical elements; allows the whole world to have a common language as reference for elements
chemical symbol represent elements on the periodic table; can be 1 or 2 letters 1st letter is ALWAYS CAPITAL, if 2nd letter it is always lowercase
atom the smallest part of an element; building blocks of matter
compound formed from two or more different types of atoms that have been combined chemically in fixed proportions
chemical formula the chemical symbols of the elements present in a compound with subscripts showing how many atoms of each element
subscript small numbers after an element that tell the number of atoms of that element present
molecule two or more atoms that are chemically combined, like O2, H2, NaCl, N2, H2O
physical change a change of shape, size, or state of matter changes but the substance is chemically the same
chemical change occurs when one or more substances change into one or more different substances
pure substance an element or compound made up of one type of particle; with a fixed structure and definite properties
precipitate a solid product formed from a chemical reaction in a liquid solution
