homogeneous mixture | mixture that is uniform in composition and properties; solutions are an example |
heterogeneous mixture | not uniform in composition and has different properties throughout |
element | pure substances made of only one type of atom; |
compound | formed from two or more different types of atoms that have been combined chemically in fixed proportions |
acid | aqueous solutions with a pH <7; stronger the acid the lower the number; feel rough |
base | aqueous solutions with a pH >7; greater the number the stronger the base; feel slippery |
Pure substance | an element or compound made up of one type of particle; with a fixed structure and definite properties |
pH | a measure of how acidic/basic a solution is; ranges from 0 - 14 |
neutral | A chemical solution that is neither acidic nor basic; has a pH of 7 |
corrosive | a solution that can damage or destroy materials or living tissue through chemical action; strong acids and bases |
solution | a homogeneous mixture of one or more solutes dissolved in a solvent |
