natural material any physical matter that is obtained made from plants, animals, or the ground
overpopulation condition that occurs when a population becomes so large that it causes damage to the environment
synthetic material a material obtained from a natural material that has undergone a chemical reaction
by-product a secondary product that results from manufacturing process or chemical reaction
photosynthesis a series of chemical reactions that convert light energy, water, & carbon dioxide into the food-energy molecule glucose & give off oxygen
ecosystem all the living things & nonliving things in a given area
producer an organism that uses an outside energy source, such as the sun, and produces its own food
consumer an organism that cannot make its own food & gets energy by eating other organisms
detrivore an organism that consumes the bodies of dead organisms & wastes produced by living organisms
food chain a model that shows how energy flows in an ecosystem through feeding relationships
food web a model of energy transfer that can show how the food chains in a community are interconnected
condensation the process by which a gas changes to a liquid
precipitation water in liquid or solid form, that falls from the atmosphere
species a group of organisms that have similar traits & are able to produce fertile off-spring
pollution the contamination of the environment with substances that are harmful to life
biome a geographic area on earth that contains ecosystems with similar biotic & abiotic features
symbiosis a close, long-term relationship between two species that usually involves an exchange of food or energy
biosphere the parts of earth & the surrounding atmosphere where there is life
paratism a symbiotic relationship between two organisms where one benefits & the other is harmed
species a group of organisms that have similar traits & are able to produce fertile offspring
commensalism a symbiotic relationship that benefits one species but does not harm or benefit the other
limiting factor a factor that cam limit the growth of a population
community all the populations living in an ecosystem at the same time
mutualism a symbiotic relationship in which both organisms benefit
population all the organisms of the same species that live in the same area at the same time
climate change changes in climate patters over time
cellular respiration a series of chemical reactions that convert the energy in food molecules into a usable form of energy called ATP
material the mater from which a substance is or can be made
