An intro into common medical terminology

TermDefinition
ECG/EKG (electrocardiography) a device that records the electrical activity of the heart.
PT stands for physical therapy, which involves the treatment of injuries, diseases, or physical conditions through exercises, stretches, and other techniques.
Rx is an abbreviation for prescription, which refers to a written order from a healthcare professional for medication or treatment.
UTI stands for urinary tract infection, which is an infection that affects any part of the urinary system, including the kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra.
Chronic refers to a condition that is persistent or recurring over a long period of time.
Acute describes a condition that is often severe but has a sudden onset and short duration.
Labs is a shorthand term for laboratory work or tests, which involve analyzing samples such as blood, urine, or tissue to diagnose or monitor medical conditions.
Stat is a medical term used to indicate that something needs to be done immediately or urgently.
Cardio- a prefix that means related to the heart or cardiovascular system.
-ectomy a suffix that indicates the surgical removal of a specific body part or tissue.
-itis a suffix used to denote inflammation of a specific organ or body part.
Biopsy a medical procedure that involves the removal of a small tissue sample from the body for examination and diagnosis.
Ultrasound a medical imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of internal organs, tissues, and structures.
X-ray a diagnostic imaging technique that uses high-energy electromagnetic radiation to create images of bones, organs, and other internal structures.
Derma- a prefix that relates to the skin or dermatology, the branch of medicine focused on skin conditions and diseases.
Gastr(o)- a prefix that refers to the stomach or gastric-related conditions.
Nebulizer a device used to deliver medication in the form of an aerosol mist that can be inhaled into the lungs.
Splint a medical tool or device used to immobilize and protect displaced or injured body parts, such as bones or joints.
Venipuncture the process of drawing blood from a vein, usually for diagnostic testing or medical procedures.
EMS stands for emergency medical services, which are a system of pre-hospital medical care and transportation provided during emergencies or accidents.
U/A an abbreviation for urinalysis, which is the laboratory testing of urine to detect and diagnose various medical conditions.
-scopy a suffix used to indicate an examination or visualization of a specific organ or body part using a medical instrument or scope.
Diagnosis refers to the identification of the disease or condition causing a person's symptoms through medical evaluation, tests, and analysis.
Triage a system used to prioritize patients' needs based on the severity of their condition, ensuring that the most critical cases receive immediate attention and care.
Terminal refers to a disease or condition that cannot be cured and ultimately leads to the patient's death.
HIPAA an acronym for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, a federal law that protects the privacy and security of patients' health information.
Renal Pertaining to the kidney, a part of the urinary system.
