QuestionAnswer
What is an air mass? A huge body of air that has a similar temperature, humility, air pressure throughout it.
What are the 4 types of air masses in North America? Maritime tropical, Continental tropical, Maritime polar, Continental polar
What is a maritime tropical air mass? Warm humid air masses.
What is a maritime polar air mass? Cool and humid air masses.
What is a continental tropical air mass? Hot dry air masses.
What is a continental polar air mass? Cold dry air masses.
What is a front? The area where air masses meet and do not mix.
Name the 4 types of fronts. Warm, cold, stationary, and occluded fronts.
What is a cold front? When rapidly moving cold wind mass runs into a slowly moving mass of moving warming air the denser cold air slides under the lighter warm air.
What is a warm front? A moving warm air mass that collides with a slowly moving cold air mass.
Define stationary fronts. When cold and warm air meet, neither one has enough force to move the other.
Define occluded fronts. A warm air mass is caught between to cold air masses.
What is the difference between a cyclone and an anticyclone? A cyclone is a swirling mass of air pressure and an anticyclone is a high pressure center with dry air.
Define storm. A violent disturbance in the air.
Thunderstorm clouds are called what? Cumulonimbus clouds, Thunder heads.
Explain how warm, humid air rising forms thunderstorms. As the humid air rises, the air cools forming dense thunder heads which make thunderstorms.
What is lightning? A sudden spark or energy discharge as the charges jump between parts of a cloud.
Thunder is different from lightning. What causes it? When lightning bolts heat the air causing the heated air to expand, suddenly and explosively. That is thunder.
What is some good thunderstorm safety advice? During thunderstorms, avoid touching metal objects because they can cause electricity from lightning into your body.
Define tornado. A rapidly whirling funnel shaped cloud that reaches down from a storm to touch earth's surface.
What states make up “Tornado Alley”? North central Texas across central Oklahoma, Kansas, and nebraska.
Where should you go during a tornado? In a basement of a well built building.
What’s the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning? A tornado watch is where there might be a tornado in an area, while a tornado warning is when a tornado has been actually seen near you.
Define hurricane. A tropical storm that has winds of 119 km per hour or higher.
Place these terms below in the correct order from smallest to largest. Hurricane, tropical disturbance, tropical storm Tropical disturbance Tropical storm Hurricane
What is it like in the eye of the hurricane? You would notice that the wind gets stronger as the eye approaches. Eye arrives, winds grow calm and the sky may clear. Eye passes, storm resumes, but wind blows from opposite direction
What should you do if there is a hurricane warning? Evacuate and leave the area.
