labia majora | a pair of thick folds of skin, connective tissue, and adipose tissue |
labia minora | a pair of thin folds of hairless skin immediately internal to the labia majora. anteriorly join together to form the prepuce of the clitoris. posteriorly merges with labia majora |
vestibule | area enclosed by the labia minora. contains the urinary and vaginal openings. |
bartholin gland | vestibular gland that secretes mucus to lubricate the vulva and vagina. increases during sexual intercourse. located deep into the labia majora on each side of the vaginal orifice |
vagina | birth canal, connects the vulva to the uterus. discharges menstrual fluid, receives the penis and semen, delivers a baby. located between rectum and urethra |
clitoris | small erectile body capped with a glans |
urethra | embedded in the anterior wall of the vagina |
bacterial vaginosis | most common cause of vaginitis in women of childbearing age, main symptom is abnormal vaginal discharged and fishy smell. diff types of outside bacteria invade and outweigh vaginal bacteria |
toxic shock syndrome | caused by toxins circulating the bloodstream from bloodied tampons left inside. |
vulvovaginal candidiasis | common cause of genital itching or burning with "cottage cheese" vaginal discharge. caused by overgrowth of yeast fungus candida and can occur after antibiotics. |
vulvovaginitis | caused by allergic and irritative agents found in vaginal hygiene products, spermicides, detergents, and synthetic underwear |
vulvodynia | chronic, severe pain around the vaginal orifice. dyspareunia is common. cause is unknown. vestibulectomy has been tried. |
vaginal cancers | uncommon. effectively treated with surgery and radiation therapy |
