Math Terms

Absolute Value The distance of a number from zero on the number line, always positive.
Area The amount of space inside a two-dimensional shape.
Average (Mean) The sum of a set of numbers divided by the count of numbers.
Base The bottom side of a polygon or the side on which it rests.
Circumference The distance around the perimeter of a circle.
Coefficient A numerical factor in a term of an algebraic expression.
Decimal A number expressed in the base-10 system using digits and a decimal point.
Denominator The bottom number in a fraction, indicating the total number of equal parts.
Difference The result of a subtraction operation.
Equation A mathematical statement that asserts the equality of two expressions.
Exponent A number indicating how many times a base number is multiplied by itself.
Factor A number that divides evenly into another number.
Function A relationship or expression involving one or more variables.
Geometry The branch of mathematics dealing with points, lines, shapes, and their properties.
Inequality A mathematical statement comparing two quantities that are not necessarily equal.
Integer A whole number that can be positive, negative, or zero.
Mean The average of a set of numbers.
Median The middle number in a set of ordered numbers.
Mode The number that appears most frequently in a set of numbers.
Multiplication A mathematical operation of repeated addition.
Negative Number A number less than zero.
Number Line A line diagram that represents numbers as points distributed in order.
Percent A fraction or ratio expressed as a part of 100.
Perimeter The total distance around the outside of a shape.
Place Value The value of a digit based on its position in a number.
Positive Number A number greater than zero.
Prime Number A number greater than one that has no positive divisors other than 1 and itself.
Proportion An equation stating that two ratios are equal.
Quadratic Equation An equation of the form ax² + bx + c = 0, where x represents an unknown variable.
Ratio A comparison of two quantities using division.
Sequence An ordered list of numbers or terms.
Square Root A number that produces a specified quantity when multiplied by itself.
Subtraction An operation that finds the difference between two numbers.
Sum The result of an addition operation.
Variable A symbol (like x or y) used to represent any member of a set of numbers or values.
Acute Angle An angle less than 90 degrees.
Base (Geometry) The bottom side or face of a geometric figure.
Congruent Having the same size and shape.
Distributive Property A property of multiplication over addition or subtraction.
Equilateral Triangle A triangle with all three sides of equal length.
Hypotenuse The longest side of a right-angled triangle, opposite the right angle.
Pythagorean Theorem A fundamental relation in Euclidean geometry among the three sides of a right triangle.
Rational Number A number that can be expressed as a fraction or ratio of integers.
Scatter Plot A graph of plotted points that show the relationship between two sets of data.
Standard Deviation A measure of the amount of variation or dispersion of a set of values.
