8th Cons of Mass
TEKS 8.6E
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Conservation of mass | the law that states mass is neither created or destroyed in chemical reactions; total mass stays the same |
reactant | the substance(s) present at the beginning of a chemical reaction |
product | the substance(s) present at the end of a chemical reaction |
yield | represented by an arrow; indicates the direction of a chemical reaction, showing that reactants have been converted into products |
chemical equation | a symbolic representation of a chemical reaction using symbols and formulas |
subscript | small numbers after an element that tell the number of atoms of that element present; cannot be changed without changing the actual compound |
coefficient | a whole number that appears in front of a chemical formula or symbol in a chemical equation to indicate how many molecules of a substance are involved in the reaction |
balanced equation | an equation for a chemical reaction in which the number of atoms for each element in the reaction are the same for both the reactants and the products. |
chemical symbol | represent elements on the periodic table; can be 1 or 2 letters 1st letter is ALWAYS CAPITAL, if 2nd letter it is always lowercase |
chemical formula | the chemical symbols of the elements present in a compound with subscripts showing how many atoms of each element |
periodic table | a chart that organizes all known elements |
