pure substance consists of just one type of particle. They can be further classified as elements or compounds.
heterogeneous mixture a mixture of two or more substances that are not uniform in composition and do not blend smoothly
homogeneous mixture a substance that is made up of parts or elements that are the same or very similar. ex. air, salt water
