Environment The surroundings and conditions in which living organisms exist and interact.
Environmental Science The study of the natural world and how humans impact it.
Ecosystem A community of living organisms interacting with their physical environment.
Biotic Referring to living components of an ecosystem (e.g., plants, animals).
Abiotic Referring to non-living components of an ecosystem (e.g., water, soil, temperature).
Environmentalist A person who advocates for the protection of the environment.
Ecosystem Service Benefits humans receive from ecosystems, like clean water and air.
Economic Service Goods or benefits that have economic value, often provided by ecosystems (e.g., timber, fisheries).
Biodiversity The variety of life in an area, including different species, genes, and ecosystems.
Genetic Diversity The variety of genes within a species.
Species A group of similar organisms capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring.
Species Diversity The variety of different species in a particular area.
Speciation The process by which new species are formed.
Greenhouse Gases Gases that trap heat in the atmosphere, contributing to global warming (e.g., CO2, methane).
Anthropogenic Caused or influenced by humans.
Sustainability Meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs.
Biophilia The innate human connection to nature and living things.
Ecological Footprint The impact a person or community has on the environment, measured in land and water usage.
Hypothesis A testable prediction or explanation for a scientific question.
Control Group The group in an experiment that does not receive the treatment, used for comparison.
Sample Size The number of subjects or observations in a study.
Theory A well-substantiated explanation of natural phenomena, supported by evidence.
Acid A substance that increases the concentration of hydrogen ions (H⁺) in a solution, with a pH less than 7.
Base A substance that decreases the concentration of hydrogen ions (H⁺) in a solution, with a pH greater than 7.
pH A scale used to measure the acidity or alkalinity of a solution.
Chemical Reaction A process where substances are transformed into different substances.
Law of Conservation of Matter Matter cannot be created or destroyed, only changed in form.
Renewable Energy Energy from sources that can be replenished naturally (e.g., solar, wind).
Nonrenewable Energy Energy from sources that are finite and cannot be replenished quickly (e.g., fossil fuels).
Chemical Energy Energy stored in chemical bonds and released during reactions.
First Law of Thermodynamics Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed.
Second Law of Thermodynamics Energy transformations increase the entropy (disorder) of the universe, and energy is lost as heat during these processes.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
