ambulate | to walk |
aspiration | very serious co ndition in which food, water, gastric contents, or other materials enter the trechea and lungs. |
body alignment | postition of a human body in which the body can properly function |
contracture | permanate shortening or contractions of a muscle due to immobility, spasm, or paralysis |
draw sheet | shhet folded under patient, extending from above the shoulder to below the hips |
Enabler | device that empowers patients and assists them to function at theit highest possible level |
Fowler’s Position | postition in which the patient lies on the back with backrest elevated 45-60 degrees |
High Fowlers | postition in which the backrest of the bed is elevated to 90 degrees, with the patient on his or her back |
Laceration | accidentle break in skin; an injury |
Lateral | away from the midline |
Mobility | ability to move or to be moved easily from place to place |
Orthopneic position | postion in which the patient sits up to breathe comfortably |
Orthotic devices | devices the restore or improve function and prevent deforminty |
Postural support | device use as an enabler that maintains body postion andalignment |
Pressure injury | injuries to the skin associated with open areas from friction, shearing, pressure, and other causers of injury. |

Prone | postion in which the patient is on the abdomen, spine straight, legs extended, and arms flexed on either side of the head |
Semi-fowlers | postion in which the patient is on the back with knees slightly flexed, and the head of the bed is elevated 30-45 degrees |
Slider | device with slippery, low-friction surface that is used for moving patients |
Spasticity | sudden, frequent, invoulantary muscle contractions that impair function. |
Splint | type of orthosis used to maintain position and prevent contractures of the arm and hand |
Supine | laying with face upward |
Supportive device | used to help maintain a patient's body in a specific postion |
Transfer | procedure followed when changing a patient's location |
Trochanter roll | rolled shhet or bath blanket placed under the patient extending from waist to mid-thigh; postiond against the hip to prevent lateral hip rotation |
