Chapter 1 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
personal bias If a person’s likes and dislikes influence how he/she thinks about something.
cultural bias When the culture someone grows up in affects the way that person thinks.
experimental bias A mistake in the design of an experiment that makes a certain result more likely
ethics Rules that enable people to know right from wrong.
objective Means that you make a decision based on available evidence. (Not your opinion)
subjective Personal feelings affect how you make a decision or reach a conclusion.
skepticism Having an attitude of doubt, not believing everything without evidence
predicting The process of forecasting what will happen in the future based on past experience or evidence.
classifying The process of grouping together items that are alike in some way.
making models The process of creating representations of complex objects or processes.
evaluating Comparing observations and data to reach a conclusion about them.
scientific investigation The process by which a scientist asks a question about the natural world, collects and analyzes data to help answer that question and communicates the results to the community.
science Is a way of learning about the natural world.
observing The process of using one or more of your senses to gather information.
qualitative observation An observation that deals with characteristics that cannot be expressed in numbers.
inferring The process of making an inference, an interpretation based on observations and prior knowledge.
quantitative observation An observation that is expressed in numbers or amounts.
hypothesis A possible answer to a scientific question. An “educated guess”
Independent variable One variable that is purposely changed to test a hypothesis
Dependent variable The factor that may change in response to the independent variable.
