Erosion & Deposition

TermDefinition
Cut Bank Where erosion increases on the outside of a meander because water speeds up
Point Bar Where deposition happens on the inside of a meander because water slows down
Delta A deposit of sediment caused by a river or stream entering a larger body of water and slowing down the flow of water
Alluvial Fan A deposit caused by water slowing as the gradient of a hill or mountain flatten out slowing the water
Gradient How steep or flat a section of land is
Load The amount of sediment carried by a moving stream/river
Discharge rate The amount of water that a river or stream carries in a given amount of time
Erosion The movement of sediment from one location to another by means of water, ice, wind or gravity
Deposition When sediment carried by water, ice, wind or gravity are dropped (deposited) in another location
Weathering Breaking down rocks into smaller pieces called sediment
Shoreline Location where water meets the land
Sea Cave Cave formed on shoreline caused by waves
Sea Arch When a sea cave is eroded all the way through the other side
Sea Stack Once a sea arch collapses and is no longer connected to the rest of the head line
Beach An area of shoreline that is made up of material deposited by waves and currents
Wave-Cut Platform A wide, gently sloping surface found at the cliff's base and extends into the sea
Barrier Island A long, narrow island, usually made of sand, that forms parallel to the shoreline a short distance offshore
Sandbar An underwater or exposed ridge of sand, gravel, or shell material
Abrasion When small rock particles rub against larger rocks or other particles to break them down
Ice Wedging A type of mechanical weathering that occurs when water in cracks in rocks freezes, expands, and breaks the rock apart
Mechanical Weathering The breaking down of rock by physically breaking the rock apart
Chemical Weathering When rocks break down and change their composition due to chemical reactions with substances like water, oxygen, and acids in the environment

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
