Aspiration | very serious conditions in which food, water, gastric contents or other materials enter the trachea and lungs |
Body alignment | position of a human body in which the body can properly function |
Contracture | permanent shortening or contraction of a muscle due to mobility, spam, paralysis |
Draw sheet | sheet folded under the patient, extending from above shoulder to below hips |
Enabler | device that empowers patients and assist them to function at their highest possible level |
Fowler’s Position | The bed angle is between 45 degrees and 60 degrees. The legs of the patient may be straight or slightly bent. This position is often used for head, chest, and shoulder surgeries |
High Fowlers | the backrest of the bed is elevated to 90, with the patient on his or her back |
Laceration | accidental break in skin |
Lateral | to the side of, or away from, the middle of the body |
Mobility | ability to move or be moved easily from place to place |
Orthopneic position | patient sits up to breathe comfortably, sits upright as possible and leans slightly forward, supporting himself or herself with the forearms |
Orthotic devices | devices that restore or improve function and prevent deformity |
Postural support | device used as an enabler that maintains body position and alignment |
Pressure injury | injuries to the skin associated with open areas from friction, shearing, pressure and other causes of injury |
Procedure | practices and processes used when following facility policies in patient care, procedure prioritizes and orders your responsibilities when doing the task |
Prone | position in which the patient is on the abdomen, spine straight, legs extended and arms flexed on either side of the head |
Semi-fowlers | position in which the patients is on the back with knees slightly flexed and the head of the bed is elevated 30 to 45 |
Slider | device with a slippery low friction surface that is used for moving patients |
Spasticity | frequently involuntary muscle contractions that impair function |
Splint | type of orthosis used to maintain position and prevent contractures of the arm and hand |
Supine | lying with the face upwards |
Supportive device | used to help maintain a patients body in a specific position |
Transfer | procedure followed when changing a patients location |
Trochanter roll | rolled sheet or bath blanket placed under the patient extending from waist to mid thigh positioning against the hip to prevent lateral hip rotation, |
