Ambulate | to walk |
Aspiration | Very serious conditions in which food,water, gastric contents, or other materials enter the trachea and lungs. It is usually accidental. |
Body alignment | position of a human body in which the body can properly function. |
Contracture | permanent shortening or contraction of a muscle due to immobility, spam, or paralysis. |
Draw sheet | sheet folded under the patient, extending from above the shoulder to below the hips . |
Enabler | Device that empowers patients and assists them to function at their highest possible level. |
Fowler's position | Patients lie on the back with the backrest elevated 45 to 60. |
High flowers | the backrest of the bed is elevated to 90, with the patient on the back. |
Laceration | accidental break in skin: an injury. |
Lateral | away from the midline. |
Mobility | ability to move about in bed, out of bed, and walking. |
Orthopneic position | where the patient sits up to breathe comfortably, the patient sits upright as possible and leans slightly forward, supporting himself or herself with the forearms. |
Orthotic devices | devices that restore or improve function and prevent deformity. |
Postural support | device used as an enabler that maintains body position and alignment. |
Pressure injury | injuries to the skin associated with open areas from friction, shearing, pressure, and other causes of injury. |
Procedures | practices and processes used when following facility policies care. |
prone | The patient is abdomen,spine straight, legs extended, and arms flexed on either side of the head |
Semi-flowers | The patient is on back with knees slightly flexed, and the head of the bed is elevated 30 to 45. |
Slider | Device with slippery, low-friction surface that is used for moving patients. |
Spasticity | sudden, frequent, involuntary muscle contractions that impair functions. |
Splint | type of orthosis used to maintain position and prevent contractures of the arm and hand. |
supine | lying with the face upward. |
supportive device | used to help maintain a patient's body in a specific position. |
Transfer | procedure followed when changing a patient's location. |
Tronchanter roll | rolled sheet or bath blanket placed under the patient extending from waist to mid-thigh: positioned against the hip to prevent lateral hip rotation. |
