Global Impact
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Climate change | Any change in Earth’s climate, including global trends in warming, cooling, precipitation, wind directions, and other related measures |
Global warming | An increase in the average temperature of Earth’s surface |
Trade winds | Winds that reliably blow east to west just North and South of the equator |
El Niño | Periodic shift when the trade winds weaken, causing ocean currents in the Pacific to be warmer than normal |
La Niña | Periodic shift when the trade winds strengthen, causing ocean currents in the Pacific to be cooler than normal |
Volcanoes | An opening in the earth's crust through which lava, volcanic ash, and gases escape |
Greenhouse gas | A gas in the atmosphere that absorbs Earth’s outgoing infrared radiation |
Carbon Cycle | The exchange of carbon that flows among Earth’s systems |
Deforestation | The removal of large areas of forests for human purposes |
Urbanization | The development of towns and cities on previously natural areas |
Fossil fuel | A natural substance formed from the buried remains of ancient organisms that can be used as a source of energy |
Glacial | Lasting cold periods when glaciers and ice sheets cover much of Earth |
Interglacial | The warm periods that occur between ice ages |
Photosynthesis | The process by which plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create oxygen and sugar (glucose) |
The Greenhouse Effect | A natural process where certain greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere trap heat from the sun, warming the planet's surface |
Respiration | The process of breathing in oxygen and breathing out carbon dioxide |
Ocean gas exchange | Surface waters exchange gases with the atmosphere, absorbing and releasing carbon dioxide, oxygen, and other gases |
Decomposition | The process where dead plants and animals, buried underground for millions of years, break down and transform into energy-rich substances like coal, oil, and natural gas |
Emissions | The release of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere from human activities like burning fossil fuels |
Consumption | The act of using, eating, or drinking |
