Tissue A group of similar cells that work together
Organ A group of tissues that work together
Organ Systems A group of organs that work together
Organism A complete living thing
Life Processes Things that living have to do
Growth An increase in size or number of cells
Excretion Getting rid of metabolic wastes
Transport Moving needed materials around also known as circulation
Metabolism The sun of all life Processes (not an actual life process)
Respiration Turning food into energy called ATP and releasing
Synthesis To make or build
Regulation Controlling the internal environment
Homeostasis Maintaining a stable internal environment called equilibrium
Reproduction Making more organisms of the same kind
Nutrition Obtaining needed materials called nutrients
Dichotomous To divide into two groups
Modern Classification Grouping things according to their similarities and structure
Domain The largest classification category. More Organisms with more differences
Species The smallest classification category. Less organisms with more similarities.
Scientific Names Genus then Species. Genus is always capitalized and species is always lowercase. ALWAYS TYPE IN ITALICS OR UNDERLINE
Scientific Method Process scientists use to logically solve a problem
Observation Use the five senses to gather information
Question Describes the problem and determines what you want to know about the situation
Hypothesis Based upon what you've learned from observations and prior knowledge to form a logical explanation
Experiment Tests that hypothesis by doing a controlled experiment
Conclusion Analyze the data
Inference Logical conclusions based on observations
Qualitative Observations Observations that use your senses (touch, hear, sight, smell, taste) to observe the results
Quantitative Observations Observations that are made with equipment such as rulers, balances, graduated cylinders, beakers, and thermometers
Hypothesis Possible explanation that accounts for a set of observations. Worded as If, Then statement.
Controlled Experiment To test a hypothesis scientists set up a controlled experiment which must have two groups that are the same except for one thing
Experimental Group The group being tested and receives the independent variable
Control Group The group that does not get the independent variable being tested by the scientist. Used for comparison.
