Term | Definition |
---|---|
Atom | the smallest part of an element that still has the properties of that element |
Atomic theory | the idea that everything is made up of small particles |
compound | a type of matter made up of two or more elements |
molecule | the smallest particle of a compound that still has the properties of that compound |
matter | anything that has mass or takes up space |
element | ingredient that makes up all other substances |
metal | element that is a good conductor of electricity and heat |
nonmetal | element that does not conduct electricity or heat |
semimetal | element that is sometimes like metal and sometimes like nonmetal |
calcium | a metal for strong bones |
mercury | a liquid metal |
sulfur | a solid nonmetal |
Chlorine | a poisonous gas |
sodium | a soft metal |
mass | the amount of matter into other a solid, liquid, or gas |
volume | the amount of space and object takes up |
temperature | a measure of how fast the particles in an object are moving |
color | a physical property of matter |
texture | the surface structure you can feel by touching |
solid | a substance that has a definite shape and volume |
liquid | a substance that has a definite volume but no shape |
gas | a substance without a definite volume or shape |
plasma | a state of matter that has electric charges at very high temperatures |
freezing point | temperature at which a liquid becomes a solid |
melting point | temperature at which a solid becomes a liquid |
evaporation | the changing of a liquid to a gas |
condensation | the process in which a gas turns into a liquid |
mixture | different materials placed together, but each material keeps its own properties |
solution | a mixture in which substances are spread out evenly and will not settle |
solubility | a material’s ability to dissolve in water |
physical change | a change in some properties of matter without forming a different kind of matter |
chemical change | a change of one or more types of matter into other types of matter with different properties |
solid, liquid, gas | states of matter |
