Matter Vocab -p.s.

QuestionAnswer
Atom the smallest particle of an element that still retains properties of elements
matter anything that has mass and takes up space (volume)
Physical Property any characteristic of a material that you can observe without changing the identity of the substance
Chemical Property any characteristic of a substance that can be observed during a chemical reaction
mass amount for matter in an object
volume the amount of space an object takes up
density amount of matter (mass) in a given space (volume)
Physical Change a change in size, shape, or state of matter in which the identity of the substance remains the same
Chemical Change change of one substance into a new substance
solid state of matter with a fixed volume and shape; atoms very tightly packed together with only movement being vibration
liquid state of matter with a fixed volume, but no fixed shape; atoms are not as tightly packed as solid allowing the fluid can flow
gas state of matter with no fixed volume or shape; in which atoms are very loosely packed
Phase Change a physical change when matter changes form one state to another (solid, liquid, gas)
freezing liquid to solid
melting solid to liquid
melting point tempature at whcih solid begins to become liquid
evaporation liquid to gas
boiling point tempature at which a liquid begins to boil (turn into gas)
condensation gas to liquid
sublimation solid to gas
deposition gas to solid
pure substance substance with all identical particles; composed entirely of the same element or same compound
mixture a substance created by mixng two or more pure substances together
element pure substance where all atoms are identical
compound pure substance in which two or more elements are chemically combined
homogeneous mixture mixture that is blended uniformly, appears to be one substance
heterogeneous mixture mixture where the individual componenets are easily seen
solution well mixed homogenous mixture where individual particles cannot be seen with a microscope
solvent in a solution it is the substance in which a solute dissolves
solute the substance being dissolved in a solution
dissolve when a solid joins together with a liquid to form a solution

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
