Barriers that hinder communication -False reassurance -Stereotyping/Bias -Judgement -Advice or opinions -Arguing -Anxiety
False Reassurance Giving false hope can be detrimental to our patients and their families
Stereotyping/Bias Bias is a personal preference, like or dislike. Stereotype is a preconceived thought or idea that you believe is correct about members of a certain class or set.
Judgement Is a statement that takes facts of a situation and adds a personal preference, value, or opinion to it in an objective manner.
Advice or Opinions -Barrier to therapeutic communication and should be avoided -Tends to interfere with the client's ability to make personal decisions, blocking their communication of their feelings, ideas and personal choices.
Argument A statement or set of statements that you use in order to try to convince people that your opinion about something is correct.
Anxiety Can become a personal barrier to communication in a person-centered relationship
Distracted Thinking Having one's thoughts or attention drawn away, unable to concentrate or give attention to something.
Overthinking From Nervousness Disrupts natural flow of conversation
Trouble Listening When focus on anxiety, can cause trouble with listening and understanding what the other person is saying.
