Matter

QuestionAnswer
mass -amount of material in a substance -measured with a balance
matter -anything that has mass and volume -three states: gas, liquid, solid
solid -has a definite volume and a definite shape
gas -has no definite volume and no definite shape
melting -changing a solid into a liquid
freezing -changing a liquid into a solid
volume -amount of space an object or a substance takes up
condensation -changing gas into liquid
vaporization -changing liquid to gas
atoms -small particles that make up all matter
chemical change -when atoms from two or more elements or compounds combine to form a new substance -digesting food -burning wood in fireplace
compound -new substance formed by combining atoms of different elements -every molecule of a compound is chemically identical
physical change -a change in matter that does not form a new substance -cutting a piece of paper with scissors -heating a marshmallow over a fire
mixture -two or more substances that are physically combined -particles are dissolved or spread evenly throughout a mixture
solvent - substance that dissolves another substance water
solute -substance that is dissolved
solubility -ability of a solvent to dissolve a certain amount of a solute
concentration -amount of solute that is dissolved in the solvent
graduated container -used to measure the volume of a liquid
water displacement -can be used to find the volume of solids
density -measures the amount of matter in a certain volume
liquid -has a definite volume but not a definite shape
physical property -characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance
solution -a mixture in which all the substances are spread evenly throughout
element -matter made up of only one kind of atom
molecule -formed when an atom joins with another atom
How is weight different from mass? -Mass measures the amount of matter, but weight measures the amount of force gravity exert on the matter.
When does evaporation happen? -when a substance changes from a liquid to a gas at a temperature below its boiling point
How is physical change different from a chemical change? -A physical change does not form a new substance, but a chemical change does.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
