Eukaryotic Organelle

Based on Worksheet 6 Sample questions

TermDefinition
Cell theory: -All living organisms are composed of one or more cells. -Cells are the basic units of life, and all life processes occur within cells. -New cells are produced only through the division of pre-existing cells.
simple definition of cytoplasm the gelatinous (jelly-like) liquid that fills the inside of a cell, excluding the nucleus.
Chromatin the mixture of DNA organized around the histone proteins FOUND IN THE NUCLEUS; when condensed, chromatin forms the chromosomes (which are the units of heredity/genetics)
Golgi apparatus -stack of membranous sacs that are part of the endo-membrane system
Golgi apparatus p2 they take in lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins produced in the ER and use them to SYNTHESIZE complex organic molecules, PACKAGE those molecules and DISTRIBUTE them to the plasma membrane [secretory] or store them [lysosome].
Lysosome Vesicles that STORES DIGESTIVE ENZYMES.
Lysosomes p2 used to digest DAMAGED organelles or particles engulfed by phagocytosis.
Microfilament -SMALLEST cytoskeletal composed of protein ACTIN. -used to MAINTAIN CELL SHAPE [by providing high tensile strength] and HELP CELLS CHANGE THEIR SHAPES.
Intermediate filament -MEDIUM-SIZED composed of protein KERATIN. - used for maintaining cell shape and serves as ANCHOR POINTS for other cytoskeletal elements outside of the cell.
Microtubule -LARGEST cytoskeletal element composed of protein TUBULIN. - used to MOVE and HOLD organelles in place in the cell, or BUILD motile CILIA and FLAGELLA.
Mitochondrion -A plastid organelle with a DOUBLE-LIPID BILAYER. - Location of AEROBIC RESPIRATION TO PRODUCE ATP. -processes bits of DNA independent from the rest of the cell.
nuclear envelope. the double lipid bilayer SURROUNDING the nucleus and DEFINING ITS STRUCTURE.
nuclear pore -GATED PROTEIN complexes -found in the NUCLEAR ENVELOPE that allows substances to move IN and OUT of the nucleus.
Nucleolus -DENSE REGIONS within the nucleus NOT BOUNDED by membranes where ribosomal RNA [rRNA] is synthesized.
peroxisome vesicles containing the enzymes associated with the CATABOLISM of AA and fatty acids and for DETOXIFYING of waste products [hydrogen peroxide] produced in these processes.
Ribosomes -composed of rRNA -a TWO SUB-UNIT organelle [large and small] -engages in protein synthesis that can be either FREE in the cytoplasm or FIXED in association with the rough ER
Rough ER membranous canal network that is part of the endo-membrane system -associated with ribosomes -site of PROTEIN SYNTHESIS for proteins that will be SECRETED or USED in the plasma membrane.
smooth ER -membranous canal part of the endo-membrane system. -NOT associated with ribosomes -site of LIPID or polysaccharide synthesis or STORAGE of calcium ions [Ca].

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
