TermDefinition
Science The investigation and exploration of natural events and new resulting information
3 branches of science Life, Earth, & Physical Science
Theory An explanation that ties together many observations and investigations
Law A rule that describes a repeatable pattern in nature. It does not explain why or how something happens
Pseudoscientific information Information that is incorrectly represented as being scientific
Scientific inquiry A process that uses skills and tools to answer questions
What do we use when making an observation? Our senses
Inference An explanation of an observation that is drawn using prior knowledge
Hypothesis An educated guess
Prediction Statement of cause and effect written in an "if-then" format
The number of factors tested in a controlled experiment? One
Variable Any factor that can change or be changed
Independent variable The factor that you want to test - scientists have control over this variable
Dependent variable The factor that you observe and measure
Constants Factors that do not change
Control group Does not receive test variable
Experimental group Receives the variable being tested
