Biotic | Living organisms |
Abiotic | Non living organisms |
Organism | An individual animal, plant, or single-celled life form. |
Population | a group of individuals of the same species living and interbreeding within a given area |
Community | a group of different species of living organisms that interact with each other within a specific geographical area |
Ecosystem | a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment. |
Biosphere | the part of the world in which life can exist (atmosphere, hydrosphere) |
Photosynthesis | photosynthetic organisms convert light energy, typically from sunlight, into the chemical energy necessary to fuel their metabolism. |
Producer | an organism that creates its own food or energy |
Cellular respiration | the process by which cells convert chemical energy from nutrients like glucose into usable energy (ATP) by breaking down these molecules in the presence of oxygen, releasing carbon dioxide and water as waste products |
Consumer | an organism that gets its energy by eating plants or animals. |
Herbivore | An animal that feeds on plants |
Carnivore | An animal that feeds on meat and flesh |
Omnivore | An animal that feeds on plants and animals |
Trophic levels | the position of an organism in the food chain |
Food chain | a hierarchical series of organisms each dependent on the next as a source of food. |
Food web | a system of interlocking and interdependent food chains. |
Energy pyramid | a model that shows the flow of energy from one trophic, or feeding, level to the next in an ecosystem |
Detritivore | an animal which feeds on dead organic material |
Decomposer | organism that breaks down dead organic material |
Primary production | the formation of autotrophic biomass (algae and plants) by the process of photosynthesis |
