Abiotic Non living organisms
Organism An individual animal, plant, or single-celled life form.
Population a group of individuals of the same species living and interbreeding within a given area
Community a group of different species of living organisms that interact with each other within a specific geographical area
Ecosystem a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.
Biosphere the part of the world in which life can exist (atmosphere, hydrosphere)
Photosynthesis photosynthetic organisms convert light energy, typically from sunlight, into the chemical energy necessary to fuel their metabolism.
Producer an organism that creates its own food or energy
Cellular respiration the process by which cells convert chemical energy from nutrients like glucose into usable energy (ATP) by breaking down these molecules in the presence of oxygen, releasing carbon dioxide and water as waste products
Consumer an organism that gets its energy by eating plants or animals.
Herbivore An animal that feeds on plants
Carnivore An animal that feeds on meat and flesh
Omnivore An animal that feeds on plants and animals
Trophic levels the position of an organism in the food chain
Food chain a hierarchical series of organisms each dependent on the next as a source of food.
Food web a system of interlocking and interdependent food chains.
Energy pyramid a model that shows the flow of energy from one trophic, or feeding, level to the next in an ecosystem
Detritivore an animal which feeds on dead organic material
Decomposer organism that breaks down dead organic material
Primary production the formation of autotrophic biomass (algae and plants) by the process of photosynthesis
