TermDefinition
Claim A claim is a statement that answers the question. It will usually only be one sentence in length. The claim DOES NOT include any explanation, reasoning, or evidence so it should not include any transition words such as “because”.
Evidence The evidence is the data used to support the claim. It can be either quantitative or qualitative depending on the question and/or lab. Only use data with evidence that supports the claim.
Reasoning The reasoning is the explanation of “why and how” the evidence supports the claim. (It should include an explanation of the science concept that produced the evidence or data.)
Variable Anything that can change in an experiment
Independent Variable The variable that is purposely changed in an experiment (the one that is being tested)
Dependent Variable The variable that you are measuring (in response to the independent variable)
Control Group A group or groups in which NOTHING is actually manipulated or changed
Experimental Group A group or groups in which the independent variable is manipulated
Engineering The design of something to solve a problem using science.
Controlled Experiment Multiple groups tested where EVERYTHING is EXACTLY the same except for the independent variable
Criteria -( Synonym for rules)
Constraints Limitations to what you are allowed to do, use, etc.
Communicate Results Report all of the findings and design solutions in a written report, a presentation or some other way that allows others to use the info. and build their own.
Develop a Prototype Solution A working model of our solution
Test Solution Find out if the solution works AND how well the prototype meets all the design CRITERIA (rules).
Brainstorm, Evaluate, and Choose a Solution- As many solutions as possible, by examining existing solutions, brainstorming ideas and making sketches of possible designs
Define the Problem by asking Whats the problem etc.
Do Background Research by finding out as much as possible about the problem and learn from the experiences of others.
Specify Requirements Determine what criteria must the design meet in order to be successful.
Hypothesis The hypothesis is an educated guess as to what will happen during your experiment
Constants Always stays the same.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
