cell the smallest unit that can live on its own and that makes up all living organisms and the tissues of the body
What is the smallest thing a cell
what is the cell theory All living organisms are composed of one or more cells. The cell is the basic unit of life. All cells arise from pre-existing cells.
nucleus a mixture of DNA and proteins that form the chromosomes found in the cells of humans and other higher organisms
chromatin a mixture of DNA and proteins that form the chromosomes found in the cells of humans and other higher organisms
cell membrane found in all cells and separates the interior of the cell from the outside environment
Cytoplasm The gel-like substance inside the cell membrane that contains structures that carry out life processes.
Organelle In eukaryotic cells, the structures within the cytoplasm that break down food, move wastes, and store material.
Endoplasmic Reticulum A cell organelle consisting of folding membranes that moves materials around within the cell.
Ribosome A cell organelle on which a protein is made.
Golgi Bodies Cell organelles consisting of stacks of membrane-covered sacs that package and move proteins to the outside of the cell.
Mitochondria Cell organelles that break down food molecules and release energy.
Lysosome A cytoplasmic organelle that contains chemicals and digests wastes and worn out cell parts.
Cell Wall In plants, the rigid structure is made of cellulose that surrounds a plant cell membrane and supports and protects it.
Chloroplast Plant cell organelles in which light energy is changed into chemical energy in the form of sugar during the process of photosynthesis.
Tissue Groups of similar cells that do the same sort of work.
Organ A structure made up of different types of tissues that work together to do a specific job.
