TermDefinition
Element A pure substance composed of the same type of atom throughout.
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space
Atoms A microscopic unit of matter; the smallest particles that can exist
Solid A form of matter that has a definite shape and volume
Liquid A state of matter that has no definite shape but has a definite volume.
Gas A state of matter with no definite shape or volume
Thermal Energy The total energy of motion in the particles of a substance
Particles A very small piece or part; a tiny portion or speck
Density A physical property relating to the amount of matter in a substance to the volume of the substance
Boiling Point The temperature at which a liquid boils; 212 degrees Fahrenheit
Melting Point The temperature at which a solid becomes a liquid; 32 degrees Fahrenheit
Solubility A measure of how much solute can be dissolved in a solvent
Solvent A substance that dissolves a solute (most common is water)
Physical Properties Characteristics that can be observed without changing the identity of the substance
Chemical Properties Characteristic that cannot be observed without changing the substance
Mass The amount of matter in an object
Weight A measure of the force of gravity on an object
Volume Measures how much the space the matter takes up
Phase Change A transition of matter from one state to another
