Vocabulary

TermDefinition
material All objects are made of some kind of material, or a combination of materials. There are lots of different types of materials. Animals and plants are made up of living materials.
methods of observation Scientists use different methods of observation while investigating materials. These methods help them to identify materials without changing them in any way.
property The characteristics of a material are its properties. Some can be observed; others can be discovered through testing.
fair test Changing only one thing (variable) at a time in an experiment keeps it fair and gives accurate results.
variable An item or condition that can be changed or controlled (kept the same) in an investigation.
mixture A combination or two or more substances (or materials).
chemical reaction When two or more substances are combined and a NEW substance is produced with new and different physical and chemical properties.
matter Everything is made of matter. Matter is made up of small particles.
opaque not transparent (you can’t see through something that is opaque)
waterproof a material that water cannot soak into
texture how a material feels (rough or smooth)
magnetic does it repel a magnet?
electrical conductivity can electricity travel through it?
thermal conductivity can heat travel through it?
