Term | Definition |

contraindication | situations in which something is not indicated, inappropriate, or potentailly dangerous. |
full weight-bearing (FWB) | the ability to stand on both legs. |
gait belt | when it is used to assist with ambulation. |
manual patient handling | moving a patient by hand or bodily force, including pushing, pulling, carrying, holding, or supporting the patient or patients body part. |
mechanical lift | may be a manually operated hydraulic lift, an electrically (or battery) operated lift, or a ceiling-mounted lift. |
nonweight-bearing (NWB) | cant put any weight on one or more extemity. |
paralysis | inability to move of any extremity, |
paresis | which is weakness of an extremity. |
partial weight-bearing (PWB) | if the patient has had hip surgery and cant put pressure on one of the lower extremitys. |
pivot | turn the entire body as one unit to transfer. |
sitting (lateral) transfer | the patient sits throughout the transfer, such as when a sliding board is used. |
sliding board | is a plastic or wooden board about two feet long that has a slippery surface. It is used for a sitting (lateral) transfer. |
standing transfer | the patient stands during the transfer with the help of one or two nursing assistances. |
weight-bearing (WB) | the ability to stand on one or both legs. |
