Ch. 16 Transfer

Definition
contraindication situation in which a treatment or an action is inapproriate.
full weight- bearing able to stand on both legs.
gait belt belt placed around the patient's waist in ambulation.
manual patient handling moving a patient by hand or bodily force, including pushing, piulling, carrying, holding, or supporting the patient or a body part.
mechanical lift manually operated hydraulic lift, electrically operated lift, or ceiling-mounted lift.
nonweight-bearing (NWB) unable to stand or walk on
paralysis loss of the ability to move parts of the body
paresis weakness of an extremity
parial weight-bearing (PWB) unable to bear full weight on one or both legs.
pivot to twist or turn in swiveling motion
sitting (lateral) transfer moving patient from one surface to another while patient is sitting
sliding board plastic or wooden board that is about 2 feet long with a slippery surface. Used for a sitting, lateral transfer.
standing transfer patient is moved from one surface to another while standing.
weight-bearing (WB) having the ability to stand on one or both legs
