Vocabulary Waves & EM Spectrum
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Longitudinal Wave | The wave in which the movement of the particles is parallel to the motion of the energy |
Transverse Wave | a wave in which the motion of the particles moves at right angles to the direction the wave is moving. |
Wavelength | the length of one wave measured from peak to peak |
Amplitude | the vertical distance between the midpoint of a light wave and its peak (crest) or trough, |
Crest | The highest point of a wave. |
Trough | The part of a wave with the least magnitude; the lowest part of a wave. |
Equilibrium | The state in which all forces acting on the body are balanced with an equal and opposite force. |
Compression | Decrease in volume of any object or substance resulting from applied stress. |
Rare Faction | the bending of light rays as they pass from one medium to another. |
Frequency | how many waves move past a certain point during a set amount of time -- usually one second is used |
Medium | A substance or material that allows energy or waves to pass through it, carrying the energy from one place to another. |
Mechanical Wave | A vibration in matter that transfers energy through a material. |
Electromagnetic Waves/Spectrum | The physical interaction among electric charges, magnetic moments, and electromagnetic fields. |
Opaque | An object does not allow light waves to pass through it, and we can't see through it |
Transmit | To cause something, like light, heat, sound, or force, to pass through a medium or space. |
Scattering | Light scattering is the spreading of light in different random directions. |
Reflection | Reflection is when light bounces off an object. |
Refraction | Refraction is the bending of light |
Wave | A wave is a disturbance or variation which travels through a medium. |
Energy | energy is defined as the necessary force or ability to do work |
Kinetic Energy | Kinetic energy is the energy an object has because of its motion. |
Absorb/Absorption | The process of absorption means that a substance captures and transforms energy. |
Transparent | allowing light to pass through so that objects behind can be distinctly seen |
Translucent | permitting light to pass through but diffusing it so that persons, objects, etc., on the opposite side are not clearly visible. |
Matter | Matter is anything that takes up space and can be weighed |
Vacuum | a space absolutely devoid of matter |
