Chemistry
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Pure substance | A sample of matter that has definite chemical and physical properties |
Mixture | A combination of two or more pure substances that are not chemically bonded - substances held together physically |
Element | A pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances by physical or chemical means |
Compound | A pure substance composed of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds |
Homogenous mixture | Molecules mixed up in an even distribution - will not separate over time |
Heterogenous mixture | Molecules mixed up in an uneven distribution - will eventually separate over time |
Chemical formula | Shows the number and kinds of atoms that make up a molecule |
Molecule | A group of two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds |
Atom | The smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element |
Coefficient | The number placed in front of a chemical symbol or formula - tells how many molecules of a compound are involved in a chemical reaction |
Subscript | A small-sized number on the bottom right of the chemical symbol that refers to the number of atoms of the element in a chemical formula |
Law of Conservation of Mass | Law that states that matter cannot be created or destroyed - the mass/number of atoms on the reactant side must be equal to the mass/number of atoms on the product side |
Balanced equation | A chemical equation that follows the Law of Conservation of Mass - equal atoms on both sides |
Unbalanced equation | A chemical equation that does not follow the Law of Conservation of Mass - unequal atoms on both sides |
Chemical equation | A description of a reaction using element symbols and chemical formulas |
Chemical reaction | A process in which atoms of one or more substances rearrange to form one or more new substances |
Reactants | A substance that takes part in and undergoes change during a chemical reaction |
Products | A substance that is produced due to the rearrangement of atoms in a chemical reaction |
