Energy Vocabulary

6th Grade Science Energy Vocabulary, Mrs. Nieto

Definition
Energy The ability to do work or create change.
Work The transfer of energy.
Kinetic Energy The energy of motion.
Potential Energy Stored energy.
Mechanical Energy Energy that results from motion/moving parts. Ex. machines, bicycle, fan..
Electrical Energy The energy from the movement of charged particles. Ex. computers, lights, phones, TV...
Light Energy Energy that travels in waves and our eyes can detect it.
Thermal Energy Heat energy. Made by movement of molecules.
Sound Energy Energy caused by an object's vibrations.
Chemical Energy Energy stored in food and fuel.
Nuclear Energy Energy stored in the center of an atom/particle.
Gravitational Potential Energy Stored energy due to position. Depends on the height of the object.
Elastic Potential Energy Stored energy in objects that are stretched. Ex. rubber band or rubber ball.
Joule Unit for energy and work.
Mass Amount of matter in an object. Unit grams (g).
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space (volume) everything you can see, touch, or feel which is made of atoms/molecules.
Speed Distance an object travels per unit of time.
Force Push or pull on an object.
Gravity A force that pulls objects toward each other; pulls objects downward toward Earth's core.
Elasticity The ability of a material to bounce back after being stretched. Ex. rubber bands, balloons...
Friction A force that opposes motion.
Law of Conservation of Energy The law that states that energy cannot be created or destroyed but can be changed from one form to another. Ex. light to heat. Potential to Kinetic...
